Dr. Michel D’ Hooghe, Belgium

Chairman FIFA Medical Committee

Dr. Michel is currently the Chairman of the FIFA Medical Committee and member of the FIFA Executive Committee. He was also the Honorary President of the Belgium Football Association and President of Football Club of Bruges. He is a senior specialist in sports medicine & rehabilitation with vast experience in the field of Football Medicine. He is a well known professional among the international sports medicine fraternity and been the driving force behind a number of high level international sports medicine conferences and medical research, namely the famous “sports medicine conferences of Brugge” spanning over a period of 25 years.

He is Chairman, UEFA Medical Committee. His a strong advocate of scientific evidence based practice of medicine and research.


Prof. Dr. Jiri Dvorak, Switzerland

Chairman FIFA Medical Research and Assessment Committee

Professor Dvorak is well known for his significant role as Chairman of the F-MARC. Prof. Jiri also works at the Department of Neurology, Spine Unit at Schulthess Clinic in Switzerland. He published 190 original papers, several textbooks, review articles, and book chapters. He was part of the editorial board of FIFA – Football Medicine Resource Kit in 2005 (1st Edition) and 2009 (2nd Edition).

He received numerous awards such as Resident’s Award of the North American Cervical Spine Research Society (Functional Anatomy and Biomechanical properties of the Alar and Transverse ligaments) Neuro-Orthopedic Award (Rotary instability of the upper cervical spine) Germany, Awards of the Swiss Neurological Society (Functional Evaluation of the Spinal Cord by MRI in patients RA and Atlantoaxial instability Knoll –BASF Award for Manual Medicine, Carl Rabl Award of the South German Society of Study for Lumbar Spine, Spine Socity of Europe Award for Basic Science and Spine Socity of Europe Award for Clinical Science.

Dato’ Dr. Gurcharan Singh, Malaysia AMN, DIMP

Chairman, AFC Medical Committee

Dato’ Dr. Singh, commonly known as Dato’ Guru, is a veteran sports medicine physician with over 26 years of involvement in sports medicine and anti-doping programs in Malaysia and internationally. He Chairs AFC Medical Committee and Hon. Director, Medical Department, AFC. A registered sports medicine physician on the National Specialist Register, Ministry of Health, Malaysia and admitted to the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia, has contributed vastly towards the development of sports science and medicine in Malaysia and Asia through education, conferences and research. 

He is a member of FIFA Medical Committee & FIFA TUE Advisory Group; FIFA Panel of Instructors for Sports Medicine and F-MARC. He is credited for the formation of Society of Sports Medicine, Malaysian Medical Association and launching the international postgraduate sports medicine programs. 

Dr Abdelmadjid Yacine Zerguini, Algeria

Dr. Abdelmadjid Yacine Zerguini, has been working on football-related matters for most of his medical career. An Assistant Professor at Algiers University School of Medicine, he is also a senior consultant in sport traumatology, knee surgery and arthroscopy at the Chahrazed Clinic in the Algerian capital.
He is a member of the Executive Committee, Algerian Football Federation and member, FIFA Medical Committee. He officiated at several FIFA World Cups. As Head of FIFA Center of Excellence, Algeria he has been and continues to be involved in several original research projects in Football Medicine with several publications in peer review sports medicine journals.



Dr. Tony Edwards, New Zealand

Dr Tony Edwards, a Consultant Sports Medicine Physician. He was a Founding Partner of the Unisports Sports Medicine Clinic and FIFA Centre of Excellence, in Auckland, New Zealand. He is a Member of the FIFA Medical Committee since 2006 representing the Oceania Confederation. He has officiated as member of the FIFA Delegation to three FIFA World Cups (Germany 2006, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014). An experienced sports physician, he was Chief Medical Officer to the Under 17 Women’s World Cup in Auckland, 2008 and FIFA Medical Officer at numerous age group World Cup tournaments, as well as the Olympic Games (Sydney 2000,Athens 2008 and London 2012).

As a member, FIFA Panel of Instructors for Football Medicine, he has contributed at various international sports medicine conferences and seminars / workshops.



Prof. Ron Maughan, United Kingdom

Prof. Ron Maughan, a research scientist, obtained his PhD from the University of Aberdeen, and was a lecturer in Liverpool before returning to Aberdeen where he was based in the Medical School for almost 25 years. He spent much of this time working on a range of projects relating to the effects of diet and exercise on muscle metabolism. He was then Professor of Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University for 10 years and now has an emeritus position.

He has to his credit various research papers published in peer review journals on exercise, nutrition and performance. He is currently a member, FIFA Medical & Assessment Committee working on several research projects in the effects of diet, performance in extreme environments and hydration.

He chairs the Sports Nutrition Working Group, Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee.

Prof. Jeans Erik Bangsbo, Denmark

Prof. Bangsbo, an exercise physiologist from Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is the leader of a research group focusing on muscle metabolism, ion transport and fatigue development in relation to physical activity and training. With several outstanding publications to his credit, he is a partner in the Copenhagen Muscle Research Centre and member of the board of the Ph.D. School Academy for Muscle Biology, Exercise and Health Research”. He has provided valuable contribution asChairman, Ministry of Culture Research Board for Sport.

As a member of FIFA Panel of Instructors, he has contributed excellent professional expertise at various Sports Medicine Conferences and Seminars. He has written more than 250 scientific articles and reviews as well as 15 books with the most recent being “Aerobic and Anaerobic Training in Soccer – with special emphasis on training of youth players”. He has several research papers and review articles on Football, Health and Performance.

Dr. Mario Bizzini, Switzerland

Dr. Mario Bizzini, a research associate at the Schulthess Clinic, an Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center in Zürich, Switzerland an accredited FIFA Medical Research and Assessment Center. He earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh he finished his doctoral study at the Oslo Sports Trauma and Research Center, Norwegian School of Sports Sciences (Oslo, Norway).

His research interests focus on hip and knee rehabilitation in sports, football injuries and sports injury prevention. He has currently published 35 peer-reviewed papers, 5 books, 7 book chapters, and lectured at more than 130 national and international congresses

He is also a specialist in sports physiotherapy and committee member of the Swiss Sports Physiotherapy Association and of the International Federation of Sports Physical Therapy, a rehabilitation consultant for professional ice hockey and football teams.

A/Prof. Shane Brun, Australia

Shane Brun is Associate Professor of Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine at James Cook University Queensland Australia, he is also visiting Professor to the Sports Medicine Unit of the University Malaya. Shane is an Elite Medical Officer and Medical Instructor with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and Fédération Internationale de Football Association(FIFA). He has worked with national and international sporting teams and athletes as the treating physician and also Medical Advisor. Professor Brun is a qualified Emergency Doctor and qualified Sports Doctor and has published and currently practices and teaches in both areas.



Prof. Yung, Shu Hang Patrick, Hong Kong

Prof. Yung Shu-Hang Patrick, a prominent young Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, holds several key positions in professional organizations in Sport Medicine & Arthroscopy surgery, namely, the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS), the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine (AFSM), The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine & Sports Science, and the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He is an educator and leads a team of researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong for the advancement of sports medicine & arthroscopy surgery.

He is committed to community service and providing voluntary medical service for amateur and professional sporting communities in Hong Kong, China & overseas. Apart from his work at Prince of Wales Hospital, he is the Medical Consultant to the Hong Kong Sports Institute.In recognition of his contributions he has been awarded as “Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong” in 2009.

Dr. Mehernosh Sherar Irani, UK

Dr. Mike Irani, a Consultant Rheumatologist / Sports Medicine Physician is currently a Fellow of both The Royal College of Physicians and Royal College of Surgeons, England as well as Fellow, Institute of Sports Medicine and Faculty of Sports & Exercise Medicine. A regular external examiner for Royal Medical Colleges and Sports Medicine post-graduate programs is actively involved with the Olympic Movement since 1984. An Executive Board Member, IWF and Chair the IWF Medical Committee, TUE Committee and Doping & Infraction Hearing Panel. He has officiated at seven Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and a host of International Championships.

He has several publications to his credit, presentations at conferences / seminars and a panel of instructors for Sports Medicine & Anti-Doping.


Dr. Martin Vaso, Switzerland

Martin Vaso is a medical doctor and a lawyer in Switzerland. He is currently working for FIFA as the FIFA Chief Anti-Doping Officer and also a medical doctor at the Schulthess Clinic, Zurich Switzerland





Prof. Jan Ekstrand, Sweden

Professor Jan is a Medical Doctor specialist in Orthopedic Surgery. He is a Professor of Sports-Medicine at the University of Linköping, Sweden. He is a 1st Vice President of the Medical committee of  UEFA Leading UEFA injury studies. A Former amateur football player. He holds a Swedish FA Coaching education (old system). Team physician of the Swedish National Football team for 120 matches, World Cup  bronze medal 1994.




Prof. Tim Meyer, Germany

Prof. Tim Meyer completed his MD and his MA in sport science at the universities of Hanover and Göttingen, Germany. Meyer wrote his doctoral thesis about the therapeutical efficacy of endurance training in panic patients (1997). His habilitation thesis at the University of Saarland was about applications of gas exchange measurements (2006). In 2007 he became chair of the Institute of Sports Medicine, University Paderborn. In October 2008 he was called as chair of the Institute of Sports and Preventive Medicine of Saarland University. Meyer´s main areas of research are clinical exercise physiology, recovery and training prescription with a special focus on football. Under his supervision, several training studies were conducted in elite and recreational athletes (altogether over 100 publications in internationally referenced peer-reviewed journals). Besides his university work, Meyer works as team physician for the German soccer association (DFB), since 2001 as part of the national squad´s medical service team.


Dr. Pieter D'Hooghe, Belgium

Dr Pieter D’Hooghe specialises in arthroscopic surgery of the Hip, Knee and the Ankle/Foot. He completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University Hospital Leuven, Belgium, Europe. He was a Fellow at the Amsterdam University Hospital where he specialised further in minimal invasive Sports Traumatology of the lower extremity. He was working in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Stedelijk Hospital in Belgium as Director of the FIFA F-MARC Flemish Surgical Center of Excellence, where he treated many national and international athletes. He is now working in Aspetar Hospital as a lower limb sportsurgeon where he performs elite athlete minimal invasive and bio surgery.  As an active FIFA F-MARC Board Member and Instructor, he is also involved in Injury Prevention with worldwide lecturing and assisting in PCMA Projects, with the main focus on the orthopaedic health assessment of Football players and Referees. Dr Pieter d’Hooghe is also  a Board Member of the ESSKA Basic Science Committee and a Board Member of the Medical Committee of the  Belgian National Football Association. As an Editorial Board Member to the Scientific Journal BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders and Aspetar Journal, he assists in publishing quality research papers. He is the author of many internationally recognized articles, several book chapters and co-editor to the book: ‘The Ankle in Football’. As a Medical Lawyer for the Flemish Anti-Doping Tribune, he is highly involved in anti doping strategies in the world of Sports.

Dr. George Nassis, PhD, Greece

Dr. George is a lead physiologist at Aspetar. He holds a masters and doctorate degree in sports science and exercise physiology and has published research on exercise, sports performance & health in international, peer-reviewed journals. Before joining Aspetar, he was the head of performance laboratory at Panathinaikos FC and academic staff at the Department of Sports Medicine and Biology of Exercise at the University of Athens, Greece.




Prof. Yorck Olaf Schumacher, Germany

Prof Yorck Olaf Schumacher completed his medical studies in Germany and South Africa. He obtained a specialisation in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine and was appointed Professor for Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine at the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 2012, he joined Aspetar. He has been the team physician for the German Olympic Team since 2000 and attended many international sporting events in that function. His research interest ranges from Sports Science and Physiology to clinical Sports Medicine, his recent focus has been Sports Haematology and the adaptation of the haematological system of the athlete to different environments.




Dr. Cristiano Eirale, Italy

Dr Cristiano Eirale is an Italian-trained Sports Medicine Physician with a focus on football medicine pathology, physiology and performance. He completed his medical training at the University of Pavia in 2001 where he specialised in Sport Medicine in 2005. From 2004 to 2006, he was the first team physician for FC Internazionale Milano, and from 2007 to 2012 the Medical Director of Qatar National Football Team. He is currently the Associate Executive Director of the National Programme of Sport Medicine. He has published several papers on football injuries, especially on their epidemiology, with a special focus on the characteristics of football in the Middle East. 




Andrea Mosler, Australia

Andrea Mosler is a Specialist Sports Physiotherapist who has been working as a senior physiotherapist in the Rehabilitation department at Aspetar since January 2013. She is also currently undertaking a PhD investigating the risk factors for the development of hip and groin pain in professional footballers. Prior to working at Aspetar, Andrea worked at the Australian Institute of Sport from 1995-2013. In addition to her clinical experience with Australian water polo and gymnastics, she was also the sports medicine coordinator for the National Women’s Water Polo programme for seven years. Andrea was an Australian team physiotherapist at many multidisciplinary sporting events with highlights including the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympics Games. 



Nicol van Dyk, South Africa

Nicol van Dyk is a physiotherapist in the Rehabilitation Department at Aspetar Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Hospital in Doha, Qatar. After graduating with a BSc in Physiotherapy from Stellenbosch University in 2005, he completed his MSc in Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy in 2010.  During the 2010 FIFA® World Cup in South Africa, he worked at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa, a FIFA® Medical Centre of Excellence.  He has a special interest in lower limb muscle injuries, and is currently investigating risk factors for hamstring injuries in elite football players. 



Dr. Yash Gulati, India

Dr.Yash Gulati is a senior Consultant of Spine & Joint Replacement Surgery of BLK Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi. He is also the Director and Head of Department. Dr.Yash has been awarded Padma Shri by President of India.





Dr. Anant Joshi, India

Dr. Joshi, is one of the pioneers in Arthroscopy & Sports medicine. Anant brings in 30 years of experience in this field. He travels and operates across the length and breadth of India and has been associated with numerous sports bodies as a medical consultant.

He is an avid sportsman himself and often cycles to work




Dr. Shibu Varghese, India

Dr. Shibu Varghese M.B.B.S, M.S. (ORTHO), F.A.J.R (GERMANY),F.A.S.M (SOUTH AFRICA)is an Assistant Professor & Orthopaedic sports surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Pushpagiri medical college, Thiruvalla, Kerala, India. Dr Shibu has completed his fellowship in adult joint reconstruction from Germany in 2011 & in 2013 has successfully completed his fellowship in Arthroscopy & sports medicine from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is Asian football confederation Medical officer and has successfully completed his FIFA football medicine course in 2013. 

He has taken part as Doping Control officer for Board of cricket control in India (BCCI) tournaments like the Indian premier league (IPL) & Champions League. Dr shibu has also done his Cricket medicine internship with Northamptonshire cricket club (u.k) in 2012 & worked with Cape Cobras cricket team from cape town, South Africa as a visiting consultant.He has also associated with Kerala football association as a team doctor and associated with Indian Super league as a medical coordinator.

Dr. Zohreh Haratian, IR Iran

Dr. Haratian is a sports medicine doctor and currently the Head of the Iran Sports and Research Academy. A Team Physian of Iran Women’s Football Team.

Dr. Randolp Molo, Philippines

Dr. Molo is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specialist working at Saint Lukes Medical Centre in Philippines. Dr. Molo provides his expertise with the players of various sports such as basketball, football, athletics at university and national team level.

He is part of the AFC Panel of Medical Officers and Instructors involved in AFC Tournaments in conducting doping controls, MRI for Age Determination, medical services and various football medicine courses and seminar.



Dr. Michiko Dohi, Japan

Dr. Michiko is a member of the FIFA Medical Committee and AFC Medical Committee. She is also panel of FIFA and AFC Medical Officer which she is involved in various FIFA and AFC tournaments as Medical Officer cum Doping Control Officer. Dr. Michiko is a Medical Doctor specialized in Sports Radiology. Dr.

She also work at Japan Football Association as Team Doctor from 2012 until now, member of the Medical Committee and Anti-Doping Sub-Committee.

Currently the Deputy Department Director of apan Institute of Sports & Sciences.



Dr. Shila Jain, India

Dr. Shila Jain is Principal Scientific Director, National Dope Testing Laboratory, New Delhi, India (WADA accredited). A Gold medalist M.Sc. (Hons.)Biochemistry, Punjab University and Ph.D. from Post Graduate Institute and Medical Research (PGI), Chandigarh. She is first Indian sports biochemist to set up the department of sports biochemistry at NIS Patiala in 1983. She has acquired extensive training in Dope analysis from Moscow, China, USA, Japan, Germany, England, Austria etc. As an active researcher, she has authored a no. of scientific publications and attended conferences and seminars at national and international level over the last 35 years. She has been guiding Ph.D./MD students. Her special areas of interest include anabolic steroids and erythropoietin. Publishing Directory on Drug in Sports” regularly since 1994, publishedfirst ever book in Hindi on drugs in sports titled ‘KhelDavaonKa’ in Aug. 2000. Has scripted a video film on “THE DOPING GAME” which was telecast on Doordarshan and DD International channel.

Dr. AlkaBeotra is Scientific Director, National Dope Testing Laboratory, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), Government of India, New Delhi. Vice President, Indian Association of Sports Medicine & Member, Doping Commission, Asian Federation of Sports Medicine. She is nominated as Executive Board member of World Association of Anti Doping Scientists (WAADS). She is Lead Assessor & Technical Assessor for ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation in the field of Chemical, Biological & forensic testing. She has 34 years of experience after acquiring Ph.D. from Dept of Pharmacology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University (1981). Recipient of Gold medal (1981) & Silver medal (1982) of Indian Pharmacological Society for her research work in the field of drugs and was the Technical Expert for the London Olympics 2012 testing. Dr. Beotra published over 115 research publications in the field of drug testing, pharmacokinetics, psychopharmacology and immunology. She has conducted many workshops on anti doping in India & other Asian countries and also served as reviewer for various analytical & bio-analytical journals of repute. Dr. Beotra is member of various expert committees/groups under Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission.
