Football arrived in Cambodia in the early part of this century and was played on an organised basis by French settlers. In the 1960s, Cambodian football was in sound shape and in 1972, the national team reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup, eventually finishing in fourth place.
However, after this promising performance, Cambodian football disintegrated as the ravages of civil war took over and the country's footballers had to wait until 1995 before playing their next international, at the South East Asian Games in Chiangmai, northern Thailand.
There is currently no professional league in Cambodia. They will play in the Tiger Cup 2004 tournament.
