In the late 1920's, football kicked off in a school called Al Khalifa, forming its own football team combining with Al Wattaniah. In 1931, a team from Bahrain made its first foray into international football when they visited Basrah city in Iraq to play two friendly matches. The team lost to Al Basrah High School team and the British Air Force. Also in the same year, the first national championship was organised with participating teams coming from the Royal Air Force, companies and organisations. Muharraq emerged as the first winners. Before the formation of the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) in 1958, the early governing body of Bahraini football set up a council to supervise football activities. It was headed by Hamad bin Mohammed Isa. The first thing they did was to set up a league and a cup championship in 1951 and 1952. A team called BABCO became the first league champions while Muharraq was the first cup champions. In 1957, this governing body announced plans to officially establish BFA and also to organise tournaments for local clubs only. Thus, BFA was born on October 11, 1958. They joined FIFA in 1965 as a temporary member and became a full member in 1968 at the FIFA Congress in Mexico. A year later, they joined AFC. In 1970, as BFA, they organised their first international tournament, the Gulf Cup. Bahrain football has made great strides in the new millennium. A huge number of players are playing professional football in Qatar and surprised many at the Asian Cup 2004 when in their first participation at the Finals, they qualified for the semi-finals and was ten seconds away from knocking out then power-house and defending champion Japan..
