KUCHING: Roman Kornilov unleashed a brace as Kyrgyzstan’s Dordoi-Dynamo defeated Manang Marshyangdi Club of Nepal 2-0 and entered the semifinals of the AFC President’s Cup here on Monday.
Kornilov scored the first goal in the 23rd minute and his second came in the 69th as Dordoi booked their last four berth against Cambodia’s Khemara. Dordoi's formula was to neutralise Manang's speedsters and that they did effectively at the Sarawak Stadium here today.
"We realised Manang are dangerous because their players are quick and run relentlessly. That was what we had to check," said Dordoi coach Boris Podkorytov.
"We were able to contain them because we worked towards ball possession and that frustrated and slowed them down. The score would have been higher if our forwards had been sharper."
It was a sad end for Manang. They were a delight to watch with their hard running and never-say-die attitude. But Dordoi's technical superiority was far too overwhelming.
"To start with, we didn't have all our best players on the field. Three of them couldn't play either because of suspension or injury," said Manang coach Chhiring Lopsang Gurung.
"The first half was also played under very hot conditions and that took its toll on my players. But we lost to a very good side."
The Dordoi-Khemara semifinal kicks off at 2000 hours on May 17 at the Sarawak Stadium.
