ADELAIDE – Adelaide United coach Aurelio Vidmar has announced the 23-man squad that the AFC Champions League runners-up will take to Japan for the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup.
After missing the Reds’ ACL campaign due to FIFA’s amendment on their rules governing the naturalisation of players, Cote d’Ivoire-born midfield general Jonas Salley is in the frame for some inter-continental club action along with Alemao, who also had to sit out this year’s Asian Champions League after Vidmar opted for the Brazilian defender’s compatriots Cassio, Diego, and Cristiano to fill his quota of foreign players.
Osama Malik and Michael Marrone have been drafted in from the Adelaide United youth squad while Vidmar has also included former 1860 Munich striker Paul Agostino, who missed the latter part of Adelaide’s ACL run due to a calf problem.
While the prognosis for Agostino is looking good the same cannot be said for vice captain Lucas Pantelis, with the midfielder remaining in Australia to continue recuperation from a knee injury.
The Reds play Waitakere United in the tournament curtain raiser on December 11 knowing that a victory over the New Zealanders will give Vidmar’s side a chance to avenge their AFC Champions League final defeat, with Gamba Osaka waiting in the wings for the winners.
