| Warriors lose ground in S.League race |
SINGAPORE – Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) followed up their elimination from the 2008 AFC Cup at the quarter-final stage with a disappointing 3-1 loss to Tampines Rovers on their return to domestic action.
Following the Super Reds surprise 1-1 home draw with mid-table Gombak United, SAF went into Saturday’s clash with Tampines knowing that victory would take the Warriors to the top of the standings with a one point lead over the Korean side.
However SAF, looking to atone for the 3-0 loss to Al Nahda that sent them crashing out of the continental competition with a 4-2 aggregate defeat, were comprehensively beaten by the resurgent Rovers.
Shahdan Sulaiman opened the scoring for Tampines in the 61st minute and although Ahmad Latiff drew SAF level ten minutes later, further goals from Fahrudin Mustafic (77th) and Qiu Li (90th) consigned the defending S.League champions to their fourth defeat of the season.
Home United, who also crashed out of this year’s AFC Cup at the quarter-final stage, can claim pole position on goal difference if they can defeat the Super Reds in a tantalising top-of-the-table clash on Monday.
