AMMAN – Al Wihdat kept in the hunt for more silverware this season after a 3-2 penalty shootout win over Al Hussein saw the 2008 Jordan league champions reach the Jordan FA Shield final.
After neither side could find the net in regulation time the tie went directly to the shootout, where Al Wihdat goalkeeper Malek Shelbayeh played a pivotal role in his side’s success by saving three Al Hussein penalties.
The two-time AFC Cup semi-finalists, who failed to get past the group stage of this year’s continental club clash, will contest the 2008 JFA Shield with Al Buqa’a, 2-1 conquerors of Ittihad Al Ramtha.
Al Buqa’a opened the scoring in the 77th minute through Osama Abu Tuema before Mohammad Abdelhalim doubled their lead 12 minutes later.
Issa Azayzeh reduced the arrears just one minute after Ittihad had conceded their second goal but Al Buqa’a, runners-up in the 2001 decider in what was their only other appearance in a JFA Shield final, held on for the win.
