KUALA LUMPUR: AFC Cup 2008 quarter-finalists Kedah and Perak remained in the fray for a place in the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup winning their respective group encounters on Tuesday.
The Canaries thrashed Sabah 5-1 while Perak edged past Johor Pasir 1-0. The victory helped Mohamed Azraai Khor’s charges move to second spot in Group B on 15 points and they trail Police on goal difference.
Perak are in third position in Group C with 15 points, three less than UPB-MyTeam and one less than Perlis.
The top two teams from the three groups and the two best third-placed teams qualify for the quarter-finals.
St. Vincent and Grenadines striker Marlon Alex James drew first blood for Kedah in the seventh minute while Cornelius Huggins doubled the advantage three minutes later. James completed his brace in the 34th minute. Two quick strikes from Fadly Baharom in the 43rd and 45th minutes sealed Kedah’s fourth victory. Nigerian David Njoku scored the consolation goal for Sabah in the 26th minute.
Chilean import Carlos Caceres scored the match-winner for Perak in the 19th minute.
Kedah will face Bahrain’s Muharraq in the first leg of their AFC Cup quarter-finals away on September 16 while Perak host Lebanon’s Safa on the same day.
