JAKARTA: Australia thrashed hosts Indonesia 6-0 to top the standings in the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-16 Championship at the Stadion Lebak Bulus on Friday.
Australia, who defeated Bahrain 2-1 in their opening match, were leading 3-0 at the breather, thanks to goals from Breandan Hamill (15), Kerem Bulut (25) and Tedros Alemaw Yabio (32).
Martyn Crook’s side added three more goals after the break. An own goal from Muhammad Abduh Lestaluhu three minutes into the restart made it 4-0 while Kamal Ibrahim (57) and Joseph Costa (83) sealed the victory for Australia.
In another match, an early goal from Ahmed Isa Ali gave Bahrain a well-deserved 1-0 victory over Singapore.
A quick counter-attack on the very first minute allowed Ahmed to slam the ball home as the West Asians picked up their first full points in the five-team competition.
Hosts Indonesia, Australia, Bahrain, Malaysia and Singapore are using this tournament to prepare for the AFC U-16 Championship to be held in Uzbekistan in October.
