SINGAPORE: AFC Cup 2008 quarter-finalists Singapore Armed Forces Football Club (SAFFC) were held 1-1 by Korean Super Reds in a much-anticipated battle between the league toppers in the Singapore Cup quarter-finals first leg on Thursday.
Both the teams are on 41 points in the 12-team league standings after 17 games but the defending champions lead the table with a game in hand.
Warriors captain Aleksandar Duric had the first crack at the goal on a wet surface in the 14th minute but Super Reds custodian Kang Su-ho turned away the striker’s shot.
After the barren first half, Singapore Armed Forces got a golden opportunity to draw the first blood but midfielder John Wilkinson hit straight to goalkeeper Kang.
Richard Bok’s side, who will host Oman’s Al Nahda in the first leg of their AFC Cup quarter-finals on September 16, opened the scoring in the 58th minute when Kenji Arai headed home a Therdsak Chaiman corner.
Seo Su-jong restored the parity for Korean Super Reds with a quarter of an hour remaining.
