ASHGABAT – Goalkeeper Bayramniyaz Berdiyev saved three spot-kicks and scored the decider as Ashgabat defeated Shagadam 3-2 on penalties to win the Turkmenistan Super Cup.
The Turkmenistan international keeper emerged the hero for Ashgabat after the 2008 AFC President’s Cup semi-finalists came from a goal down as regulation and extra-time finished 1-1.
David Ayrumyan gave Shagadam the lead ten minutes into the second-half before the reigning Turkmenistan league champions drew level 15 minutes later through veteran campaigner Begenchmuhammed Kuliyev.
Neither side could add to the score line in extra-time setting up the penalty shootout, in which Berdiyev played the key role in Ashgabat winning the third edition of the Turkmenistan Super Cup.
In addition to the defence of their Turkmenistan league crown Ashgabat will now focus on their AFC President’s Cup semi-final clash with Tajik side Regar-TadAz, which takes place in Bishkek on September 19.
