KUALA LUMPUR: Tajikistan giants Regar-TadAZ registered their second consecutive victory in the AFC President’s Cup Group A games beating Bangladesh’s Abahani while Nepal Police Club were held 1-1 by Pakistan’s WAPDA on Tuesday.
Tajikistan international Ibraguim Rabimov opened the scoring for the former champions in the 15th minute but Ghanaian import Awdu Ibrahim leveled the scores for Abahani ten minutes later.
The Tajikistan champions, who had won the inaugural edition of the AFC President's Cup in 2005, sealed the victory at the stroke of half-time when midfielder Jamshed Ismoilov found the back of the net.
In another match, Zulfiqar Ali Shah gave WAPDA the lead in the 78th minute but Jumanu Rai, who had scored a hat-trick in their opening day 4-0 win over Abahani, restored parity one minute from time.
The Pakistani champions could have sealed the three points in stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty after defender Rakesh Shrestha brought down Khuda Bakhsh but goalkeeper Ritesh Thapa blocked Bakhsh’s shot to earn a point for his side.
Regar will be gunning for revenge when they take on Nepal Police Club, who are second in the section with four points, in their last group clash on Thursday. Regar lost to the Nepalese club in the semi-finals of last year's edition. Bottom-table Abahani meet WAPDA in an inconsequential game on the same day.
