KUALA LUMPUR: Former champions Regar-TadAZ and Nepal Police Club (NPC) recorded opening day victories in the AFC President’s Cup Group A qualifying games at the MPPJ Stadium on Sunday.
Tajikistan’s Regar overcame Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) 2-1 while the Nepalese club thrashed Bangladesh’s Abahani 4-0, thanks to a hat-trick from Jumanu Rai.
Davrondzhon Tukhtasunov scored the match-winner for Regar in the 76th minute after Imran Niazi equalised for WAPDA in the 24th minute Bakhtiyor Hasanov’s eighth minute opener.
In the other match, Ananta Thapa opened the scoring for last year’s runners-up against Abahani in the 15th minute before Jumanu doubled the advantage three minutes later.
Jumanu, who scored three goals in Nepal’s successful qualifying campaign in the AFC Challenge Cup 2008, made it 3-0 with a 56th minute strike and completed his hat-trick from the spot in the 70th minute as Birat Krishna Shrestha’s side romped to a facile victory.
Nepal Police Club take on WAPDA on Tuesday followed by the Regar-Abahani match.
