| Bangladesh coach calls it quits |
 |
| Bangladesh coach Abu Yusuf |
DHAKA: Bangladesh coach Abu Yusuf has decided to quit after the team’s poor showing in the recent SAFF Championship.
In a letter to the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president Kazi Salahuddin on Monday night, Yusuf asked the BFF to relieve him after he failed to guide the national team to the semi-finals of the SAFF Championship.
Yusuf was appointed as one of the four BFF coaches in March and the former national footballer was given charge of the national team for the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers in Kyrgyzstan and the SAFF Championship in Maldives and Sri Lanka.
“I was assigned to the national team for two tournaments and I admit the failure (with the national team). But the environment was not coach-friendly,” complained the former centre-back.
Bangladesh failed to qualify for the AFC Challenge Cup finals, falling behind eventual qualifiers Afghanistan and hosts Kyrgyzstan while Yusuf's men finished third in the SAFF Championship group stage after draws with Bhutan (1-1) and Afghanistan (2-2) and a 1-0 defeat to co-hosts Sri Lanka.
