Kuala Lumpur: The future of coach education in Asia continued to make impressive strides forward in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia yesterday when around 100 coach educators from across the continent gathered for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Coaching Coaches Seminar 2016.

The three-day seminar enables participants to examine the new AFC Coaching Convention, which will provide a valuable tool in the education of the continent’s technicians. The future of coach education in Asia will also be discussed.

Coach education is regarded as a key focus area to ensure the success of Asian teams as envisaged under the AFC’s Vision and Mission – which was further underlined by AFC President, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, in his written message to participants.

The seminar, which is the second gathering of coach educators this year, is helping establish a more professional and sustainable coach education system in Asia. In his opening remarks, AFC Technical Director Andy Roxburgh underlined the importance of creating a structured and progressive education pathway for coaches at all levels of the game through the introduction of the AFC Coaching Convention.

He said: “The AFC Coaching Convention will provide the rules and guidelines for the education of tomorrow’s coaches. Eventually, it is hoped that all MAs will take full responsibility for the implementation process.

“Through a progressive approach, we will work more closely with our MAs and their coach education tutors to enhance the level of coach education.

“The regulations and guidelines in the Convention will also help to facilitate the movement of coaches throughout the continent.”

During the next two days, participants will also be introduced to some of the industry’s best practices, and gain insights from global experts, including UEFA Coaching Instructor Wim Koevermans, Technical Director of the Saudi Arabia Football Federation Jan Van Winckel, FIFA and UEFA instructor Erich Rutemoller and FIFA Technical Development Officer Lim Kim Chon.
