Sydney: Runaway leaders Sydney FC finally claimed the A-League Premier’s Plate on Saturday thanks to a 2-0 win over Newcastle Jets which also saw them establish a new points record for the competition.

On a night of high drama, Newcastle forward Andrew Nabbout missed a 42nd minute penalty, before second-half strikes from Milos Ninkovic and captain Alex Brosque secured the victory and moved Sydney to 66 points from 27 games – one more than the previous high of 65 set by Brisbane Roar in 2011 over the course of a 30-game season.

After finishing some 17 points ahead of second-placed Melbourne Victory, Sydney's Premier’s Plate success represents the club's first piece of silverware in seven seasons.
