Kuala Lumpur: Renowned Australian football journalist and broadcaster Les Murray died on Monday morning after a long-term illness.

Murray, born in Hungary in 1945 before migrating to Australia in 1957, was highly influential in popularising football in Australia, serving as the face of the game over the span of four decades on SBS television.

Spearheading the first FIFA World Cup to be broadcast on SBS in 1986, Murray would go on to cover every edition of the tournament until his retirement at the conclusion of Brazil 2014.

Murray also authored a number of successful books and served on FIFA’s Ethics Committee.
