Saint Petersburg: Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President, today congratulated Germany and the DFB on their victory in the FIFA Confederations Cup Russia 2017.

The AFC President also praised Russia for the staging of the event, saying: "The tournament reflected well on the host cities and the Football Union of Russia and has clearly created anticipation ahead of next year's FIFA World Cup.

“As always, Germany demonstrated their strength with the success against Chile in the final but we must also recognise the efforts of Australia who were a credit to football in Asia.

“They were in a very difficult group but draws with the South American champions Chile and the African champions Cameroon guaranteed them a creditable third place in the group. Congratulations to them and Football Federation Australia.”

Also, Asian referees did the continent proud at the tournament, with Islamic Republic of Iran’s Alireza Faghani, Reza Sokhandan and Mohammadreza Mansouri officiating the semi-final clash between Portugal and Chile, and Saudi Arabia’s Fahad Al Mirdasi, Abdulah Alshalwai and Mohammed Al Abakry refereeing the third-place play-off match between Portugal and Mexico.
